Greetings from the other side of Work Hell 2011. OMGYAY
I am still alive, still recovering from the crunch of the past ~month, but quite a bit happier now it's done. Whew! I'm still waiting to be sent corrections for the 2nd half of Clay 19, but Skip 25, Natsume 9, and Saiun 4 are all in the can. Woot! Skip 26 and Natsume 10 are all that's on my plate right now, and they both have the usual 8 week deadline. Things are looking good! *knocks on wood*
Last weekend was Stumptown, and I was too tired and still wrapping up Clay's Perpetual Fighting Scene volume to do more than meet with friends for dinner all three nights. On Friday I went with neekaneeks and mcruthless to Drink and Draw Like a Lady, where I was mostly their silent, pale shadow. That is probably one of the few times a comic book store has held around 60 people, 100% women. Heh. I ended up spending the last half our perched on a low shelf, resting my feet and trying to stay awake.
Saturday night I arrived half an hour before Stumptown closed, and met Shoujo Editor 2. Her comics group had an extra badge, and it was nice to gain admittance to the con--though everyone was shutting down for the night. ^^ This is my third Stumptown, and the first one taking place at a real convention center, rather than a big room connected to a hotel. :P SE2's circle of comicking friends are all wonderful people, and I even met two new ones this year. ^^ We went to dinner at a place in South-East Portland whose name I don't recall but served delicious mac-and-cheese, and leftovers came to you in a foil sculpture. I finished my plate, but SE2 didn't and received a cute foil squirrel as her takeout. ^^ I ended up having a great view of the takout-sculpture preparation table and witnessed a foil island with palm tree, foil molotov cocktail, foil battle axe, foil broadsword, and foil flamingo. :D
After that, we had fun battling crowds at the official after party, and experienced the psychodelic bathroom. It was really something! No right angles, everything in black or mirrors, this crazy tile pattern on the floor. If the designer was aiming to keep people from lingering in there, they succeeded! O.o
On Sunday, I arrived at the same time, was loaned another extra pass, and this time tables were still set up for business. I was able to meet Phil Folgio, of Girl Genius fame. ^^ I also found Neeka and Chiz, I introduced them to SE2, and we wandered around what was left of the con together. For dinner they ran off with other friends, and I once again joined SE2 and company at a Cuban restaurant also in SE Portland. This is the third time I've been, and every time we end up wandering around for 20 min looking for the place. ^^ Heh! I orderd this traditional Cuban stew that was very very tasty, and a mango milkshake that was the same. Again, no leftovers for I was hungry and can pack it away. :B
All of us were rather tired, and SE2 and friends had to wake up around 4 in the morning to start the drive back to San Fran. I came home and crashed.
On Monday, I took almost a whole day off. I read in the sunshine with my cat for almost two hours, and it was lovely. I did do corrections for the first half of Clay, but that was part of relaxing. ^^ IF I am home and don't do some work, guilt and anxiety kick in. (Know thyself, right?) In any case, it was a lovely day of relaxing. I took a half-day of relaxing on Tuesday as well. Neekaneeks and McRuthless came out to my apartment, we hung out and yakked, hit the Thai place next door, then I drove us all to the Japanese grocery store Uwajimaya, where much buying of goodies was had. I found three (English) manga vols I wanted in the 50% off discount bin, drooled over the brand-new Tegami Bachi art book ($50 and shrink-wrapped, all I admired was the cover), and placed an order for Loveless vol 9 in Japanese. (You know I love Loveless, and even before Stuart drop-kicked Tokyopop's North American manga branch out the door, I intended to buy it in Japanese b/c I could find no listing for it in English on any bookseller's site anyway. That's the main reason I began learning Japanese all those years ago.) :P~~~~~
Now I am back to work, and feeling much better than I have for many days. I've returned to running, too. The third day, I could already feel the improvement! Always fun. Hopefully this time it will stick. I'm back to one minute each of jogging and then walking for half an hour. My easiest level, soon to be increasing in intensity and duration. Gotta start somewhere! And work off all that food. Being a stress eater has its price.
I am determined that next year, I will be able to hand out postcards for my manga, make trades for same with others, and pimp my stories to everyone. I want to play, too, damn it! X|
