My Manga Method, Part II: the Japanese pages
So I have the script. Now I need the book's pages. No, I don't work on actual paper, I mean the digital pages, which are scans of the original paper work submitted by the mangaka. (Yes, some mangaka are all-digital, but I've still never lettered for one yet.)
Each page is its own tiff image file, even the two-page-spreads. Each file is at 1200 dpi and about 8 megs in size. The occasional higher or lower resolution book can happen, but 1200 dpi is by far the most common in my experience. Almost always, I download the files from an ftp server. I've been sent burned CDs of pages twice, but that is actually rather rare. I must say, I am very very glad that I know how to use ftp. All those years of running my anime fandom sites have NOT gone to waste!
Each volume is about 200 pages long. If a book will appear in either Shonen Jump or Shojo Beat magazine, then their color pages will sometimes be added to the download. Viz only prints color pages when they appear in the magazine, so if you buy the actual book volumes only, sorry, you miss out. (Alas. Though VizBig volumes have color pages, none of my titles have graduated to VB yet.) The color pages are only at 300 dpi, but they are much larger in size, anywhere from 20 to 100 megs each if it's a two-page spread. (Color 2 page spreads are not separated, BTW.)
These pages are the final pages as used to print in Japan. If you compare the file to the same paper page in the Japanese tanko, or manga volume, they will be identical. Dialogue, FX, page numbers, etc etc etc. ONCE I was lucky enough to have the unlettered version of the pages. These pages did have dialogue inside the word bubbles, but "floating" type, such as thoughts, narration, or shouted spells that sit directly over the background were NOT on the pages. The reason only "floating" type was missing is because it is added via computer in the printing process in Japan. And for some reason, this particular volume's text-free pages were available. This was wonderful, as it meant I didn't have to retouch/cover up any Japanese that would have been left exposed by the English version. Again, it was fabulous, especially on the chapter title pages. An extreme time saver! Too bad it doesn't happen more often...And the volume was Naruto #21, if you're curious.
In regards to how the files are sent to NA so Viz can in turn send them to me, I'm fairly certain they are sent through ftp from Japan. This is me speculating again, of course.
So now I have the script and the pages to work with, but I still have one last step before I begin to letter, and it is by far the most important when it comes to saving time. *wink*
