Truly, the internet is a wonderful thing. It's been such a huge, incredible force in my life that I cannot begin to comprehend what would have happened if I had not first logged in back in 1995.
A timeline:
Fall '95: chatting with another student who was already online in my study-hall period (who needs to do Calculus homework?) led me to pester my father to get me plugged in. He does. I become addicted to IRC at 72 baud a second.
Late spring '96-summer '96: My Elfquest IRC nick "Leetah", opens conversation about Sailor Moon. The other person's enthusiasm for the show made me decide to give it a try. I tune in at 8:30 on a Wed morning. A week later, I'm hooked, two weeks and I'm recording every ep. Finding fansubs and becoming a subtitle-only convert quickly follows. FY changes my perspective on animation.
Late summer '96 : I recognize the nick "Nuriko" in another IRC chat room and meet Nuriko-chan. We hit it off online, arrange to meet IRL, and I'm blown away by her and her incredible artwork. So inspiring!! Escaflone further changes my perspective on animation.
1998: My waning interest in animation has been fully rekindled. I begin to check out art schools that offer it and chose one in AZ. Alas, it's the wrong one. I won't give its name b/c I don't want anyone to go there thinking it's a good place. But while I'm there, I meet some other anime geeks and begin to teach myself Japanese. I also open my anime music site in my spare time and meet tons of people over the net.
late 2000: I have my (half-educated) degree, am out of money with no job prospects, so I move home. I keep running my music site, which is my pride and joy.
late 2000 - mid 2004 - The Dark Ages. My site has grown to be a monster and is no longer fun. I pull the plug on the mp3s and rediscover how relaxing spare time can be. My movie idea is born and begins to develop. I also begin scanlating the shounenai manga Zetsuai 1989 for myself and my friends. I decide to share it online. One of my better mp3 friends points me towards a job listing on Viz's site for manga letterers. I decide "what the hell" and apply.
Jan 2005 - Shoujo Editor #1 hires me to work on NANA. My brain explodes from joy. I'm very grateful for all my web site master experience and scanlation history, as it has prepared me for freelancing artwork over the net. (YAY to ftp!!)
spring 2005 - I leave my Day Job at Blockbuster and letter full time.
late 2005 - I join LJ b/c two of my internet friends belong. I then proceed to ignore the site for months at a time. I also see my own first manga GN in a bookstore. Nana vol 1. I freak out in public. People stare, and I don't care.
fall 2006 - I discover what LJ communities are and behind lurking at
fanficrantsand the
shojobeatcomms. All the reading about fanfic makes me want to try it, so I try writing out the dream that cemented my love for Gaara-sama. (Yes, it's based on a dream. I admit it! I changed almost everything but the raw emotion. The real thing was much too...ah...let's just say I'd have to worry about TOS violations these days.)
Dec 2006 - I post a question to
fanficrantsand end up meeting Star-chan, who offers to concrit my "character drama Naruto fic". We hit it off as friends. I remember how much fun writing can be.
Jan 2007 - I post the first chapter of DaaGB to the Pit, and finally begin to use my blog for more than once-a-season entries. Alas, my newfound verboseness makes my longest internet friend vanish from my flist without a word.
Jan 2007 - present - My friends lists expands anyway, I meet all sorts of awesome people on my fave comms, I write more fanfic and love it, I draw the occasional pic and love it, I work like a raving mad scientist bent on world domination and love it, I hear how awesome Portland is and plan on loving it, too. ^^
In conclusion: All hail the power of teh intrawebs!! XD
