Interest meme: installment #1
A few weeks ago, while I was in the middle of my reduced LJing, selene-chan sent me the interest meme in a comment. I promised to respond, so here I am! The first installment!
Tuxedo Gin: this is the second manga I ever lettered professionally. I took over the end of the series and lettered the final two volumes, 14 and 15. This is a shounen comedy, with a touch of romance and action. The premise is quite fun: Ginji is a high schooler with a promising career as a professional boxer. Right after he meets Minako, the sweet girl of his dreams, who--miracle of miracles--likes him back, he dies. D= A buddhist angel (it's a running joke) comes and informs Ginji he qualifies for reincarnation back into his former body...but first he must live a full lifetime as an animal. Ginji immediately decides upon Minako's favorite animal: the penguin. What follows are 15 volumes of fun, including Ginji escaping from the local aquarium where he was reborn as a penguin chick, tracking Minako down and becoming her pet, almost becoming a (penguin) father, dodging the claws of the family cat, and protecting her from all the grabby oogling guys--except himself, of course. The ending is solid and sweet, though I now permanently hate hate haaaaate the FX "ba-bump". You'll understand if you ever read the ending. O.o
This series is noteworthy from a lettering standpoint for several reasons. It was the first title I lettered with Senior Editor Who Loves Me, and led to me working on Thedreaded English. Because I took over this title from previous letters, I had to match their fonts, which means I used the font Wild Words for all dialogue. I do not like this font, it's unweildy and has severe kerning issues. (Kerning is the distance between letters.) Wild Words is also the font I had to use for The English, which doesn't exactly improve my opinon of it. Tuxedo Gin also has two horrid pages from hell: one in vol 14 with a large retaining wall along a country road (ghaaa!) and in vol 15 of a gradient background behind a rooster. Completing that last one made me determined to figure out complete gradient background replacement, which thankfully I managed not too long later.
Arlsan Senki: Ahhhh, this is a fantasy title from Japan. First written as a series of prose novels, then adapted into a 13 volume manga series, and finally turned into an anime. Only the anime has ever been licensed here. Classic swords and sorcery! Prince Arslan is only 14 when he loses his family and kingdom by treachery in his first war battlefield. He's rescued by his devoted guard Daryuun, and then goes into hiding. He finds various allies, learns the horrid truth about his father's claim to the throne, and faces his burn-scarred cousin Hirumes. Arlsan is the 2nd series I ever scanlated. I'm only about 20 pages into the first volume, though. T.T I began working on manga professionally, you see, and no longer had time for my scanlations....BTW, Arslan is full of eye candy. Glorious lovely bishounen!! *swoons* And the anime has some of my fave seiyuu, too...Shinozawa Kaneto (D in Vampire Hunter D, Prince Demando in Sailormoon) Koyasu Takehito (Hotohori in FY, Aya in Weiss Kreuz, Keiki in 12K), Yamaguchi Kappei (Ranma-kun, L, InuYasha)...*happy sigh*
I was extremely lucky and managed to buy both of the Arslan movie soundtracks for the first two installments. The third soundtrack was for the OAV sequels, but as yet I haven't come across it. T.T I do have a complete collection of Arlsan artbooks, though. I bought them from someone in Japan. I don't think she liked me much...but she liked my money well enough. *sniffs* Anyway, the artbooks are lovely. One contains the illustrations for the original Arslan novels, drawn by Amano Yoshitaka, of Vampire Hunter D artwork fame. Two others are by the character designer for the anime. She's very very good. O.o Oh yes, I have at least one Arslan doujinshi!! I forgot! And the programs from both movie premiers. I think I have an Arslan notebook, too. Hmmm. All the paper goods were bought in that batch deal from the woman I somehow irritated. :P
Continuing, the last time I checked, Arlsan manga was out of print in Japan and difficult to find. It was drawn in the 80s, so the odds it will be licensed here anytime soon are slim since the average NA manga reader has no patience for "old" titles. But Arslan's story is timeless!!!
