Death Note grabbed me from the first ep I watched over a year ago, downloaded before the anime was licensed by Viz. I waited too long to watch it, so when I finished the 5 eps I did download before the license, I was stuck since the DVDs weren't out yet. So I switched to manga, which is always better anyway, right?
I began to read the books, picking up new volumes when I could, avoiding spoilers online like mad, rereading from the beginning every time I added the next volume to my collection. Then I hit volume 7, and I died inside along with L. That happened in August. It took me three months before I would even look at Death Note again. But finally I did resume my reading, starting from the beginning once more. Then my grandmother died, so I paused. Then resumed, then my grandfather died, so I stopped once again. I'd had enough of death.
Last week, I finally resumed reading where I had lapsed in vol 10, and yesterday I finished the series. A year's worth of passion, of excitement, of anguish and agony and laughter and suspense and it in the end--
Ryuk just writes L's name in his Note, and Light dies after much pathetic whining. He passes into the void, where everyone goes.
...........
So all those hints dropped through the series, that people who use the Death Note don't go to Heaven or Hell, and Ryuk's comments that Light is already a great Shinigami, they were all false. No Shinigami!Light. Not even a dramatic death for him, a complicated death worthy of Kira, the murderer of thousands of people. Nope. He just has a heart attack and dies, like the majority of his victims. Fitting I suppose...but very boring.
What are we left with in this ending?? The world is back to being a violent place. Kira has worshipers including a woman who might or might not be Misa. Near has taken over the role of L, found his own Watari, and is occasionally working with the remaining members of the Japanese Task Force to hunt down criminals.
I saw only two truly satisfying facets in the ending. 1. Mello and Matt's apparently pointless deaths by nobodies which actually saves everyone (but Light), and 2. what is widely known as Matsuda's Moment of Awesome.
We don't know what happened to Misa, unless that woman on the last page really is her. Not a word about Light's sister or mom. Was Light even revealed to the public as Kira's identity?? What about Ryuk, did he get in trouble back in the Shinigami realm for breaking so many rules??? Is he bored again?? Grrrmph.
I admit it's a nice wrinkle that Matsuda is still trying to figure out if Near orchestrated the whole Grand Finale with Mikami's stolen Death Note. And Near eating chocolate Mello-style was cute. But mostly I'm really disappointed that Light didn't become a Shinigami. And I'm truly upset that...
...that....
L really did die in volume 7. He was supposed to sweep in and defeat Light at the very end with his magnificent wonderfully weird self, but he couldn't. Because he was dead. All this time I'd held on to a shred of hope that he was still alive thanks to an inadvertent spoiler I happened across in fanficrants that revealed his actual name. I didn't know about volume 13, so that meant his name had to be mentioned in the story!! Rem didn't kill him after all! it really was a ruse so L could work uber-undercover to catch Light! L would appear in magnificent style, force Light to admit he lost, and reveal that his secret real name saved him!!!!!!!
But no. Light defeated him back in vol 7.
GRRRRRRRRRRR.
So. Death Note. Begins with a bang, continues with a wow, chokes your heart with a NOOOOO! Slogs through the agony with a Timeskip, and ends with a fizzle.
Grmph. *goes off to sulk in the corner* My wonderfully weird L....
