slr2moons: a self-portrait, of me in my usual habitat: in front of my computer monitors! (hopeful)

the end of Avatar..

I took two hours off of work, eschewed exercising, and watched the Avatar finale in real-time.

So. I knew everyone would survive, even the villains. This IS an American kid's show, after all. Main characters never die in those. Not on screen, anyway.

I'm a Zutara fan at heart, but I knew my ship was hopeless when Zuko ended up dating Mai earlier this season. Woe.

The Kataangs are happy, and me too. I know Katara and Aang genuinely liked each other, and Aang has had his crush since the first ep, so it's nice to see him get what he wanted. Katara wasn't complaining, either.

I am disappointed we didn't see him age physically. Though perhaps if I rewatched the first few eps, he would be taller now in comparison. He was shorter than Katara in the beginning, and he was still shorter than her in the end. That's just how I judged his lack of growth. :P I suppose he really wasn't old enough to have hit the true growth spurt to shoot him up past her, though. He's what, 13 at the most?

The battles were cool. They must have been hell to storyboard.

I wanted Uncle Iroh to play a larger role. And the White Lotus tile society. I did bawl when Uncle hugged Zuko, though. That was my favorite part.

I wish Aang had stopped all the stupid name-calling by Sokka nand Toph of Ozai at the end. That kind of behavior should be beneath them by now. You know, having been through so much and saved the world. It would have shown how they all grew. At least Aang's emotional maturity is evident. Even if he didn't stop them.

Pretty cool how Katara defeated Azula. I wish Azula hadn't fallen apart like that. Her defeat would have been more powerful if she'd been in control and sane at the time, yet still lost.

I love Zuko in his Fire Lord getup. X3 It almost makes me want to grow my hair out again so I can do the ponytail and stick the Fire Lord crown in my topknot. X3

We never found out what happened to Zuko's mom. :|

But we did finally really see a female Air Bender. About time. I think we caught a glimpse of one in the background in an Aang flashback, but now we definitely know they exist. And one was even the Avatar.

In conclusion, it's hard to believe after almost four years, Avatar is finished. Will we ever have another NA animated epic like it? Or will it remain up to Japan to provide us with lovely and magnificent overall plot arcs and character developed animated glory?

My only true regret about the show is that I wish the target audience had been skewed a few years higher. But oh well. I'm profoundly grateful that someone in NA finally paid attention to the appeal of those long anime storylines, convinced a huge network to take a risk on it, and even did a good job.

Okay. I want my DVD set now. ^^
