Breaking Dawn: the end of Twilight
Okay, I'm back. I finished Breaking Dawn last night. For those who might not know, Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final(?) book in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga.
I didn't even realize how irritated I was, nor how much the book bothered me until I began writing this post. Huh.
The happy ending fell flat. Everything worked out, with room for a sequel! Yay!! But it was too...neat. No one we really cared about died, Bella's wish was fulfilled and she's a vampire, all her self-conscious woes vanished, she didn't have to suffer the horrible first year we've been fearing for so long, she and Edward can now have lovely hot voracious sex all the time, they have a happy little family with the kid. Jacob is no longer heartbroken--he didn't even work through it on his own, just MAGIC!imprinting on the kid--but at least Leah's problems weren't solved instantly. I was worried she would end up with Jacob to make things even nice and neater, but not. Thankfully..
The whole half-vampire child thing was too sudden. I just appeared in book four--POOF, here 'tis!!--without any foreshadowing or mentions in the previous volumes. I read the early chapters of BD with growing trepidation as my suspicions were confirmed. The stereotypical have sex once, and you get a baby! Wheee! Bella suddenly turns into protective mommy mode! At least the pregnancy and birth were horrible. If everything had been roses and bubble baths I would have really been irritated. Though now I think about it, Bella's vampiric birth was rather pat, too. Turn her to save her life! Edward HAD to do it, to keep her by his side!! :P~~~~ So much for his worries about her soul.
For me, the best part of the book was Alice's uber plan to vanish and save everyone without their knowing. Forcing Bella to act on her own in Seattle without Edward holding her hand was nice and a welcome change. Keeping secrets from Edwardikins, ONOES!!! *snorts* But Alice definitely PWNed everyone else in the book.
Learning the Volturi's true motive for needing an excuse to attack was a nice touch. I love complicated plotting that's more than just US b.c we're good vs THEM b/c they're evil, and I did have some of that with this bit and Alice's manueverings.
As offspring goes, the kid wasn't too bad. It would have been amusing to see her behave less than perfectly, though. The illusion of perfect motherhood and blissful childrearing is perpetuated. At least the aforementioned pregnancy and birth were horrible.
But mostly I feel for poor Jake. He was given the short end of the stick.. I LOVED the section of the book from his POV. That was great, and a welcome break from mommy!Bella. Yet MAGICAL!imprint and Whoooooosh!!! Jake's inner conflict and turmoil were solved in an instant. How lovely for him and the rest of the wolves.
How boring for us.
The ending would have been much stronger if some consequences were seen. I mean, the group was in the crosshairs of the Big Bad Vampire Powers that Be, but the only one who paid the price was the nastybad traitor who we barely knew or cared about. Everyone else escaped scott-free!! All thanks to Bella's sudden super powers!!! Woooooooooo!
Grrrmph. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a novel geared towards starry-eyed teenagers, written by a religious Mormon woman.
I'm glad I read it, but I don't know if I'll read it again. I'll have to think about it. This probably goes for the whole series.
Poor Jake....my poor, poor Jake...
