You know how association with something not so great can ruin something you'd otherwise like? That's the way I feel about Guitar Hero. I bring it up b/c the rock radio station I listen to is only playing songs you can find on the three incarnations of the Guitar Hero game. (This station does a theme every week. I'm not sure if it's a Portland thing or if I just didn't listen to the radio enough back in Texas to pick up on it.) Anyway, this week it's Guitar Hero, so unfortunately for me, the game is on my mind.
When it first came out, two of my IRL friends (I won't say their names this time) were roomies. One of the friends has a rather obsessive nature. She'll find a new interest or hobby and latch on to it like mad. It will consume her and eclipse everything else. Sometimes it lasts a couple of weeks, sometimes a couple of years. Can you see where I'm going with this?
Yes, she latched on to Guitar Hero. Every time I drove the hour and a half (one way!) to visit my friends, she'd whip out Guitar Hero and want to play. Of course, since both friends had the game, they were very good at it. While I, who only played when I had the time to visit once every few months or so, rather sucked. The first couple of visits, the game was still new to me and fun. I enjoyed it, even though I was laughingly bad. But as time went on, I wanted to do other things. I wanted to chat, or watch the newest fansub from Japan, or draw, ortry to convince them to play Mahjong, but....no. Obsessive Friend Was Not Interested. When we gathered in their apartment, she would always pull out Guitar Hero. And she herself had to be on the controller all the time. Oh sure, she might sit out a game or two and let someone else have a go, but in no time at all, she was back in the game.
On the third visit, I was a surprised when she fired up the game. The fourth visit, I was irritated. The fifth visit, I pointedly ignored it and chatted with other people while we "watched" her play expert level. You might think I'm overreacting here, but these visits were spread out over a period of a year and a half. These two friends lived so far away, and with my insane work schedule, I could barely ever visit them. And when I could, Guitar Hero would dominate at least an hour of my stay. Enough already. I didn't even like going into a Best Buy with her b/c she'd see the Guitar Hero display and it was always "OMG let's play a round!! XD"
*sigh* And to top it all off, there's this one song, one of the first ones a noob would play on Guitar Hero #1. I can never remember what it's called. I can't remember which group wrote it. But I will forever associate it with my not-so-fond feelings for Guitar Hero. The moment I hear those first 7 notes, I turn off the radio.
Ugh. If only Obsessive Friend hadn't burned me out, I'd probably love the game. Who knows, I might even have made it my 2nd Playstation Game to Own!!! But nope, not going to happen now. EVER. Meh.
