...but in a good way! *is devious*
I haven't been blogging much lately, for a couple of reasons. Most importantly, the spare time that I would normally use for blogging has been going into working on the Vampire Knight giftpic and then my little 6-page doujinshi for Vampirates. (It was Jossed several months back, but I like it too much to give it up, so it's officially AU.) I've also ended up with a backlog of important and long emails to write that I'm chipping away at. And I even went out two nights in a row! WHOA! *almost faints with shock*
So I've been busy. ^^
Last night, I tried natto for the first time. Those of you who have been in anime and manga fandom will be familiar with this food. It's fermented soy beans. Very sticky, slimy, and generally considered an acquired taste. BTW, I didn't acquire it. But I ate half my serving, which impressed the waitress. Heh! If it hadn't been so sticky, I could have downed more. But I swear, it was like chewing GLUE. *shudders* The feeling of it in my mouth was just nasty. If any of you like natto, then you have my wide-eyed respect. Ghaa!
Now the fun thing that gave me the energy to post today. ^^ Every so often, SE2 asks me for page suggestions for the lettering test. That is the test that Viz letterer wannabes take to prove if they have the stuff. An applicant picks around five pages from a selection of about 20, letters them using a provided script, and sends them to Viz for evaluation, meaning the manga editors rip their efforts apart. In my case, I was sent feedback for the 1st set and asked to submit a 2nd round from a different series. I paid attention to the feedback and did so. It was after that 2nd set that SE1 hired me for Nana, way back in January '05. (OMG four years ago!)
So today with much delight, I grabbed for some of my books and began flipping, looking for appropriate pages. X3 I was especially evil by suggesting one horribly complicated scene in particular. (I don't want to give any specifics beyond this so all applicants are on the same footing.)
The trick is to find pages that are difficult but also will let the applicant's talent shine--if they have it, of course. So I try to pick pages with a variety of FX styles and some medium to serious required touchup. Which translates into Orange and Pink pages. Hell yes, I'm being mean! I had to suffer through Angel Sanctuary (death by screen tone!) in my first round! And then Naruto (death by speed lines!) for the 2nd! If someone wants to do this for a living, by the manga no kami they're gonna have to work for it!!! >:D
*cackling, evil laughter*I wish I could see the applicants' submissions...
