Naruto is BACK!! Kyaaaa! X3

This post's use of the Insane Laughter icon is meant in a good way!!! I have long been missing Foxy Boy and Angst Muffin, thanks to Work Hell preventing me from taking any new volumes last year. But the two guys have returned to my docket, and on a permanent basis. To quote my beloved Inner Sakura: HELL YEAH!! XD

Here's the scoop: the bigwigs at Viz decided they wanted to catch up to the manga release in Japan. But not at the slow and sure rate of half a vol printed in each issue of Eng SJ, but all at once. This is why a slew of Naruto books are coming out in the next couple of months, including my vols 35 and 38. (Viz did this mega-book-release before, back in '07, when they jumped from vol 16 or so to the last pre-Shippuuden book, vol 27.)

Now, I've mentioned before that Naruto will be going chapter by chapter here very soon. Since SJ in Japan is released weekly, and SJ here in NA is released monthly, that means each Eng SJ issue will have the 3 or 4 newest Naruto chapters in it. Japanese Naruto manga will no longer be years or even months ahead of NA Naruto. They're going to be matched.  ETA: Come to find out, they won't be exactly matched. The English version will trail behind the Japanese by a month or so. Which is obvious when I think about it, since mangaka are always scrambling to barely meet deadlines and of course Viz has to have time to convert the pages into English. DUH. *facepalm* So I guess the scanlators will still be first. :B

Those of you who have been reading manga for some time will be able to recall instances when mangakas mention they corrected things for the book version. Script mistakes, art bungles, forgotten clothing or hair details, etc etc. This happens for all books. The mangaka and their editors check the pages that have already been printed in the magazine for errors and fix those errors before sending the pages off to be archived in book form. But the regular Naruto letterer is doing her stuff to the magazine-Naruto pages for super-fast turnaround, rather than waiting for the book version. Can you see where this is going??

Yes. Those same fixes done in Japan to the magazine pages will have to be duplicated here on the English Naruto mag pages. You can't expect the Japanese manga team to keep a nice list of changes they made post-mag pre-tanko, so the only way to be sure to match ALL the changes is to just use the Japanese tanko/GN pages for the English GN. This is where I come in.

I'll be sent three things to letter Naruto: 1. Japanese tanko/GN pages as tiffs, just like before. 2. Script, just like before. 3. the layered file of the Eng-mag pages. I take the English text and FX from the mag page, stick them in the right place on the GN page, make any tweaks and changes as noted in the script, and probably re-patch the background as well. (I'm not sure how much of the mag-pages' background touchup I'll be able to use. The mag pages are printed larger than the GN ones, so who knows how well background patching will take to scaling down? Lines? Maybe. Tone? No way.)

Viz has never done a book like this before, so we'll be figuring out how this is going to work as we go along. I should be starting the GN conversion in about a week and a half. My first book will be vol 45, and I will be continuing from there. :3 I'm going to be so lost in the story line!! "Who is that?! Where is Itachi?! Why is Naruto's head shaved and Kakashi-sensei is missing an arm?!" (just kidding!!) ^^V

Over the past couple of months, Naruto Editor has kindly sent me freebies of all the books to be released in this 2nd Great Manga catchup, so I have Eng Naruto through vol 40. (Don't get too upset--it's for lettering reference, really. The fact that I want to own and read them is just a fortunate bonus. X3) I need to get reading do my homework!

I must confess. The last time I read Naruto manga straight-through was several years ago, so I could only read through vol 10 or so since that was as much as had been released. And here now I have the complete set and I've barely cracked 3/4ths of it. *is embarrassed* I'd watched the anime, so I didn't really need to read it as well, and then I was so busy and had so much else to read that I hadn't seen already in anime form, so....yeah. *squirm squirm*

Oh yes, and for those interested in the anime: it's only half-filler at the moment. The Sasuke/Orochimaru interaction currently going on is in my vol 38. The toad silliness and new Orochimaru minions (the kid and the crystal woman) are the filler half. I suppose this is one way to make everyone keep watching. Someone at Pierot is sneaky!

It's a good thing I have no ice cream, cake, or cookies in my apartment, as I'd have binged in celebration. But I did splurge and eat a 400 calorie bowl of noodles and chicken. :9 And I had plum wine, too!!! *waves her tiny peacock sake glass it the air* KAMPAI!!!!!!!!

(LJ spellcheck's first suggestion for "Orochimaru" is "Irishman". *snerk*)
