giftpic: Tomo's Vampire Knights

I've been mentioning it for months in my posts: "Today, I worked on the giftpic..." a couple of you even saw the draft version and offered much-appreciated feedback. I began it not long after I moved, so it took me forever to start, then 4 months to finish once I did. I had to work on it in my spare moments, which as you know were few and far between thanks to bouts of Work Hell and the recent return of Naruto to my docket, but...here it is. Finished at last. *happy sigh* And I dare say it turned out rather well. ^^V

This pic was created for Tomo Kimura, who is the translator for Viz's releases of Nana, Skip, Wanted, several other shoujo and shounen titles, and the big one: Vampire Knight. We've ended up online friends. :D Christmas '07, Tomo sent me some wonderful furoku goodies (extras sent with manga mags in Japan, like calendars, posters, stickers, cell phone straps, etc) and I offered to draw her a pic of whatever she wanted in exchange. She chose herself sandwiched between the two male leads of Vampire Knight: Kaname and Zero. I rather liked her choice, as I'm not going to complain about being forced to meticulously study fine examples if bishounen. X3 For Christmas '08, she sent me even more furoku goodies, and I knew I had to finish her pic and make it as gorgeous as I could. So I pulled out all the stops and hit it.

Technical info: Nothing but photoshop from first sketch to finish. Tomo asked to be wearing the kimono worn by Hio Shizuka in volume 4. The kimono is printed in b/w only, so Tomo wanted it to be light purple, and I went with yellow accents to complement that. (This is the first time I've ever drawn a kimono!) Tomo said Kaname was her fave of the two guys, which is why she's leaning against him and they are holding hands. Zero (my fave...) has to be content with kissing Tomo's hair with his eyes closed. *comforts him with a hug* The background rips are taken from the style of the VK manga covers, which have characters placed over ripped-paper backgrounds. I found a lovely pic of some trees silhouetted by the moon and used that with some tweaking to fill the window behind the rips. This is only the 2nd time I've painted anything digitally, so I tried something different. I didn't blend the color on the two guy's uniforms completely, but left it slightly rough to give them texture. I'm pleased with how it turned out!

My favorite aspect are the eyes. I loved how they turned out!! I painted them in Matsuri Hino-sensei's style. XD I'm also very pleased with Zero's hair. ^^V

I'm so glad I finished this pic at last. Tomo was incredibly patient, and for that I am very grateful. I learned quite a bit from completing this painting!! So what artwork is next from me??? Why, it's time to start practicing my manga skills! And that means....the Vampirates doujinshi! Kyaaaa! I hope to post the first two pages in a few days. I've been working on them also here and there (but always after Tomo's giftpic!) and now that's done, they have my full attention. XD
