general update, IRL and shigoto

Clay 15 is here!! This is actually the third full day I've had it. ^^ I made my key sheet a couple months ago, right after my copy of the Japanese tanko arrived, and as usual I underestimated the page difficulty. I tend to forget how tedious Clay touchup can be. Ah well...I'm about a month ahead of schedule on Nana, still no script for Skip 20, still no script for the 2nd half of Natsume 1, so it's just Clay and Nana! My Clay daily quota is 4 pages. I have three days off and a 46 page buffer. I'm finishing one pink/Page from Hell Clay page a day to get them out of the way before Skip or Natsume arrive. My key sheet shows Clay 15 has only 6 pink pages, but....*points to earlier sentence about underestimating page difficulty*. This volume is still definitely easier than Clay has been of late, so that makes me happy. And I won't be tweaking my FX letters this time, like I did for vol 14! Wooo!

At least one of my days off will be used this weekend, as it's the big comics festival in Portland, Stumptown. I've scanned the schedule and found two panels I definitely would like to attend, but of course they're happening at the same time. :P I've still barely scratched the surface of non-manga comics, so I haven't heard of all the special guests and names they drop on that site. *goofy smile* Shoujo Editor 2 is actually attending with her comics circle! She does original comics with her sister, and thus will have a table to plug her stuff. Isn't that awesome?!? I wanna do that one day!! X3 It will be fun to hang out with her a bit! This will be the 2nd time I've seen her IRL, as we met face-to-face when I visited Viz on my SanFran/Portland trip in summer '07.

When I asked, SE2 said the independent comics circles don't mind and can even enjoy manga, it's more the mainstream types who resent or feel threatened by it. Ergo, I'm not going to hide my anime-pin-decorated purse, but I'm not going to wear my bright red Ichigo (from Bleach) shirt, either. (The anti-anime/manga sentiment has been around since the mid 1990s. That's a subject that deserves its own post. I have some nasty stories about Those Who Hate Anime from my college days. Double-standard hypocrites!!! *snarls*)

I'm not sure how long I'll hang around the convention, as I know from anime con experience they can be quite boring in-between stuff you want to do, and unlike anime cons the dealer's room (IS there a dealer's room?) won't have much appeal to me. No viewing rooms, either. I'd better take my small notebook for writing and sketching. I mean, SE2 needs to work her table and visit with her Portland friends; I can hardly expect her to spend several hours hanging out. I plan to hit the con and see what appeals, and then when I'm bored, vacate and spend some time at the nearby mall or Powell's Books, then go back to join SE and co for dinner. ^^ I'll try to blog about what all happens! (I wish Neil Gaiman or the Pinis were going to be there...*mope*)

Oh yes, and I am FINALLY starting to read my FMA manga collection. I've been finding the books here and there for a couple years, and now have 1-9 and a scattering of later volumes. I estimate that's enough for me to figure out if I really am missing out on something that so many people think is one of the best series out there. Wheeee! If FMA still doesn't grab me after this, at least I'll be familiar enough with the characters and plot to no longer be lost when other fans start talking about it. :P

I finished the Skip anime. They didn't write their own ending like the Clay anime did. They didn't chose a powerful place to stop it without really ending it, like the Nana and FuruBa anime both did. Nope, they just cut it off at the end of vol 11/chapter 66 and left us hanging. They threw us a couple bones during the ending credits, but that's it. URGH! If people want to find out how Ren solves his problem, or what happens with Sho, then they're going to have to read. Good for manga sales, I suppose, but I was really REALLY looking forward to seeing the Sudden Love Story arc animated. And the piano squence! OMG, the PIANO SEQUENCE!!!! *headdesk* Why, oh WHY couldn't they give Skip a 2nd season?!?!?! *cries*

Mmph. Okay, enough from me. Clay calls!! Clare and company are in the thick of it, as always....
