I've been meaning to write about Temp title for weeks, so here it finally is!!

As one of my favorite manga series, I am very excited and happy to be lettering Temp. ^^V I am doing three volumes, plus a single 45 page chapter that I'm working on right now. When these pages were offered to me, the single chapter was described only as a "proto chapter", so I figured it was an omake-style side story. Imagine my surprise when I began to letter and read in the proto chapter's intro that this is the very first trial debut of Temp title! :O So not only am I able to letter something as huge and beloved as Temp title, but I'm entrusted with its very first version! Whoa!!!! Lucky me. ^^

It's strange to read this one-shot...only two characters who appear in the canon version of Temp are present: the main character and a certain other person. Nice and vague, right? It's so strange to see them like this. The main character's appearance almost exactly how they end up later, and their character's background is similar, but definitely different. The other character is barely in this proto version, so all we can really compaire is their appearance. And it's quite jarring! *laughs* So reading Proto Temp is like reading an alternate universe fic. Weird. Cool, but weird. ^^

Tonight I noticed something rather interesting. You can watch the artwork improve as you progress into the one-shot. The characters on the first few pages are not up to the usual standard I've come to expect from this mangaka. They're very rough and uncertain. But now that I'm only a few pages from the end--shaBAM! Everything's the way it should be. ^^V

My only concern aside from the neverending deadline worries is that I keep finding myself uncertain about what style to letter Temp in. This is the third time I've worked on a series whose lettering was begun by someone else (#1 was vols 14 and 15 of Tuxedo Gin, #2 was the English *shudders*) so the mechanics of font choice and size and word breaks always seem off to me. When I first began working on the Proto chapter, I kept my most recent canon volume of Temp handy for quick reference. But it's still weird. >< Half the time as I work, I wonder how much of it I'll end up correcting in a few weeks. Joy. ><

The FX are interesting. Since only the first few canon volumes had occasional hand-drawn FX, the rest were all type. And nowadays for Temp, everything's type. Of course, my thing is hand-drawn FX. Temp editor did say I could give the books my own stamp, just to not overdo it. So I'm trying. I only drew 2 FX by hand in this proto chapter, the rest are type, or type that's been slightly tweaked by me. (I like to add blobs to the type to make it LOOK like it's drawn by hand. ^^V) Since matching the original version's FX style is like a religion for me, at least I'm not worried about that!

On the difficulty scale, Temp falls on the same level as Nana. In fact, it's downright EASY. Even the pink pages are nothing compared to a pink--or even an orange--page of Skip or Clay. It's the complexity of Skip that makes those pages hell, and it's the horrid backgrounds that do it for Clay, but with Temp...I'm amazed. A few lines, some swirls for clouds, maybe a bit of tone, and you're done. O_o Here's hoping that the retouch for the three canon volumes is as simple!!

Speaking of which, I already have the script for the first of the three regular volumes of Temp I'll be lettering, vol 21. I must finish the Proto chapter first, so hopefully I can dive into Temp canon tomorrow or Friday. ^^ Oh yes, and to restate my line from many blogs before, any and all guesses as to the true identity of Temp title--be they correct or not--will be met with the answer "I must reveal nothing!" At least until I can finally tell people about it.

Annnnd! The manga report!! Four day's worth!

Clay: 9.166, 170, 177, 178
New: 1.131-134, 136-141, 145, 146
Skip: 9.91, 93, 98-100, 102-107, 109
Temp: fanbook.251.253-264, 266
Green: 10, Yellow: 26, Orange: 9, Pink/PfH: 2.
Total pages: 47. Wheeee!

And the reason I only did 4 pages of Clay is because Clay vol 9 is DONE. Oh yes, finally over. >< Believe me, I did much rejoicing. YAY!!!!!!! I also tackled New title corrections for the first time. A LOT of them, much more than I'm used to with Shoujo Editor. X_x It's new book/big title syndrome. Everything must be picked over, every readable bit of Japanese in the background must be replaced, everything must read juuuuust right, etc etc etc. I'd be amazed if less than 10 people read over the first version of the pages. Anyway, New title corrections took about 7 hours altogether. Oog. >< That's all I did last night, once I finished my quota. If I'd been able to work on Temp title, like I had intended before New title's corrections arrived and proved so horrid, I'd be done with Temp Proto by now. *sighs* Ah well.
