The towel brigade has begun.

Imagine, if you will, a house that sits with its back half inside a hill, making it partially underground. Now, imagine what happens when it rains about 5 inches in two days. Further, imagine that fire ants have eaten through the dirt covering the back half and top of the house, and that the house's drain wasn't placed BELOW the foundation line, but right alongside it.

That last bit is important, b/c this means the drain only begins to work when the water reaches the bottom of the house. Which means the house must be sitting in a puddle of water before the drain kicks in.

And thus, you have my current situation. Water seeps up through the floor of the back of the house, in the kitchen and utility room. Towels must be jammed against the bottom of cabinets and over tiles, wherever the water appears. They must be constantly monitored and replaced.

The only good thing about this situation is that it takes a LOT of rain in a SHORT amount of time to percolate through the hillside and puddle around the bottom of the house before this happens. The BAD thing about this is that once it starts, it can last for days as the water drains through the soil and rock. Constant towel maitenance is needed.

My mother and I have been nagging my dad that this needs to be fixed for years. Years! Mom has taken a few steps on her own, but he keeps dragging his feet. Guess what, Dad??? You can't ignore this any more!! Time to sell some stock and fix this little problem, which will require essentially digging our house back out of the hill, digging even farther down to lay a new drain, and filling everything back up again. Wheeeeee!! I see a five-digit number in our future!!!

If you will excuse me, I must go and check the towels. *sweatdrop of annoyance*

Update early Sun morning: it wasn't nearly as bad as it has been in the past. Water only came in for about an hour. I completely lucked out...whew. But it still needs to be fixed!!!
