30 Day Fanfiction Meme, day 1!

My fanfic sempai, stariceling, invited me to join her in the 30 Day Fanfic challenge meme going around tumblr. I'm keeping my tumblr for my artwork and comics-related stuff, so I'm posting here instead. Yes, I plan to post every day. I will keep it under a cut, though, since I know almost no one here is interested in my fannish scribblings. ^^

Verily, Day 1!

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

This question has two levels: stories I actually wrote when I was just a kid having fun or doing assignments, and then the first fanfic I wrote when I understood I was writing fanfiction.

As I've mentioned many a time, I was a horse fanatic. I loved horses. Everything I wrote or daydreamed or drew had a horse in it. I wrote my very first fanfic when I was in the 5th grade, which made me 11 or 12. It was a story about models horses that came to life when your back was turned. (Pixar totally ripped me off!!1!) I revisited (and much improved) the story as a teen in high school, and even was serialized in a model horse fanzine. (You know, an actual hard copy on paper fan-made magazine snail-mailed to people all over North America.) *giggles*

I also wrote an extra chapter at the end of Huckleberry Finn as a class project when I was a Freshman in high school, and another one for Oedipus Rex when I was a sophomore. My Freshman lit teacher actually read my Huck Finn assignment out loud in class. I hid my face in my arms the whole time, I was so embarrassed/proud. *laughs*

Now, my first "OMG I'm writing fanfic" happened after I discovered fandom online. I belong to an old-school email anime mailing list, and one member whose messages I liked had a link in her email signature to her blog on LJ. I started dropping by every so often to read her posts, and in one of them she mentioned making a post to the LJ community [community profile] fanficrants and earning over 100 comments, because two members had an argument over something, in classic FFR style. :P I visited the comm and was amazed to see people talking about Avatar: TLA and Buffy and Star Trek and Harry Potter. And they were writing STORIES for them!! I read one or two that were linked as examples of the right way to write various subjects, and I began to wonder if I could do it.

A few months before this, I'd had a dream about a certain fictional character upon whom I had a fandom crush. Gaara, from Naruto. When I was pondering if I could write good fanfic, I remembered that dream, and I decided to give it a try. No one had to know what I was doing; it was just my silly dream written out in a Word file on my hard drive, right?

Except then I decided it might be good enough to share. I ended up meeting stariceling when she offered to beta-read the first chapter, we ended up becoming BFFs, and three years later I finally posted the ending chapter to Distracting and a Great Bother. 23,000 words, still my longest fic to date!

As for why it was Naruto that pulled me in, I think the dream and my then-obsession with Gaara explains that. ^^ I will add that I enjoyed Naruto's story and characters from volume 1, and I loved playing in Kishimoto-sensei's sandbox.

And it WAS fun. Now here I am, over 6 years later, and I still enjoy dabbling in fic two or three times a year. :D
