30 Day Fanfiction Meme, day 15!
15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what’s the strangest thing you’ve warned for in a fic?
Oooh, warnings. There's a wank-filled issue, particularly these days when it seems you have to warn for every little thing.
I used to lean old-school to warnings. A book you pick off the shelf doesn't have fanfic-style warnings, so why should a fic? But the longer I spend in fandom, the more I've learned to respect the need for warnings. True, a paperback won't have warnings, but if someone is really sensitive about something, they can google or check out Goodreads or Amazon for reviews to see if the book contains that thing it's best they avoid. It's a great deal harder to do that kind of research for a fic, even if it's a famous classic.
Nowadays, I try to walk the middle line. I warn for a stock set of things, and if I'm talking to a friend and I know a fic has something in it that will upset them but doesn't necessarily earn a warning by fandom rules, I'll tell them ahead of time.
I feel it's most important to warn for non-con, AKA rape. Dub-con as well. Following that is torture. (I wish I'd known what was in Wizard's First Rule before I read it. I'd have been prepared.)
The strangest thing I've warned for, in a fic I wrote? I don't do much crack!fic or get way out there, so at this point, I'd say it's "malicious violence" for Grimmjow in my Bleach fic "Not as Nice as Me". It didn't go on long enough to be outright torture, but it wasn't hey-let's-fight violence either; it was meant to scare the other character, so yeah. Malicious violence.
The strangest thing I've warned for, in a fic I recced? That would have to be "Cartman", in a South Park fic. He was in fine form, and it was extreme enough I decided it would be best to warn for it. :B Runners up would be "mpreg" (male pregnancy, which has become old hat in fandom, but newcomers would find it shocking) and "insanity" in a particular Lord of the Rings crack!fic.
Again, I try to walk the middle line and only warn for the really big things. I don't expect anyone to warn for every little thing that might upset me, either, but I do like to know going in if there's a rape scene or torture. *wince* I'd rather be prepared than surprised for those two. *sigh*
