slr2moons: a self-portrait, of me in my usual habitat: in front of my computer monitors! (Bwa?)

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

s2m is a confused and suspicious chibi elf tonight. Today I went shopping for airline tickets at the usual place, American. Now, I understand that the airline business is a horribly complicated affair and that earning a profit can be tricky. But I have to wonder at what I found:

A one-way ticket from Dallas to SanFran is $700. A round-trip ticket: $325 dollars. Hmmmmm. Only one half of the journey is twice the price. And the ticket service even breaks the round-trip ticket into two: departing and return. The departure ticket, the same thing as the one-way ticket from Dallas to SanFran?? $200. Back to Dallas? $125. Hmmmmmm.

A one-way ticket from Portland to Dallas is $300. A one-way ticket from Portland to SanFran is $150. Now, this one at least makes a little sense, since Dallas is much farther from Portand than SanFran.

The end result of this pricing adventure is that it is cheaper for me to fly to San Fran, drive to Portland, fly back to San Fran, and then fly home to Dallas ($475 for the tickets) than it is for me to fly to San Fran, drive to Portland, and fly directly back to Dallas. ($1025) And it's cheaper than flying to SanFran round trip, driving to Portland, and flying directly back to Dallas--not using the return SanFran-->Dallas flight. ($625).

Bwa??? What are these airline pricing guys smoking?? Or are they throwing darts at random numbers to decide this???

Let us hope my four-hour padding between landing in SanFran from Portland and departing again for Dallas is enough of a self-made layover.

And yes, I bought my tickets. ^^ I'm heading to San Fran on August 16th!! XD
