s2m no Tabi no Monogatari, Day 2 part 1
Ahhh, gomen-ne, minna. I've been busy with work, and when I have spare moments to write, I've been typing away on my Clay fanfic. I really want to finish it soon. But here I am at last with day 2 of my trip. ^^
Day #2: Friday the 17th. I set my alarm for 8:30 or so, but slept in an extra hour. When I woke up, I ate more granola and trail mix for breakfast and prepared myself for my mile walk to the Viz office. I have an excellent sense of direction, so I took my small freebie map, left my hotel and turned right, briskly walking down the street. La la la, smile at the other pedestrians, when I reached my first cross street. I checked my map to make sure I was headed the right way and saw--nope. So I turned around and walked back the way I had come, la la la, smile again at the other pedestrians, passed my hotel, and noticed the fun mural painted on the Voodoo Lounge bar on the corner. It's a very amusing mural, and done by a talented artist. I especially liked the bartender, who was pouring a drink using voodoo magic. *grins* I turned right again and walked...when it occurred to me I'd better check the map again. I wasn't! Onward! La la la, smile at the construction workers, la la la. About half-way there, I stopped short when I realized I forgot the camera. Ttaku. So I turned around and went back to my hotel. O.o Wheee! S2m is getting her exercise today!!
Camera retrieved, I took a few pics of my hotel and one of the voodo mural. (Hee) A bus was behind me when I took that one, but I didn't care. I wanted a pic of the voodoo bartender. *giggles* La la la, smile yet again at more construction workers and pedestrians, la la la... I finally noticed that I would reach Viz about 25 minutes early, so I slowed my pace. Which is good, b/c by this time I was developing a blister on my right foot. >< La la la...and there it was. Viz!! With the Naruto plug on one side of the movie theater marquee (it was converted to Viz's office space) and a Shojo Beat plug on the other. But alas, I was early. To kill time, I turned left and proceeded down the street, which is the direction all the tourists were headed.
Oh yes, by this time there were many more tourists around. Remember, my hotel was in a residential section. I meandered along with them and found myself staring out at the Bay. Oh look, Alcatraz! So I took a pic of it. Unfortunately, the digital camera I had borrowed from my Dad doesn't have a zoom (and I never figured out how to make the flash work) so Alcatraz is this small whitish dot on the water in the pic. But oh well. I'm not much of a shutterbug anyway. I still had lots of time, so I walked along and found everyone watching a bunch of seals in between two docks. Another pic of the seals. By then, it was only about 10 minutes until I was due at Viz at noon, so I turned and made my way back. A seagull the size of a turkey (and I'm not exaggerating) trotted alongside me for a while, and of course all I could think of was "Mine! Mine! Mine!" XD
I walked the three or four blocks back to Viz--and there it was again! With its imposing, opaque glass and metal doors. O.o A gulp of courage, and I walked in!!
Before I ever left Texas, I had made sure to pick Shoujo Editor #1's brain on proper proceedure. So on his instructions, I went to the front desk, told the nice Japanese receptionist I was there to see Shoujo Editor #1 (from henceforth, SE#1) and signed in. I then sat down to wait in one of two chairs. A generic businessman was waiting in the other chair. I gave him a smile, noticed the tattered Japanese manga mag sitting on the table between us, and flipped through it. It was Shounen Sunday. Interestingly, the shounen mag didn't have the colored paper like Hana to Yume does. I can't remember if they used different colored inks or not. It was either the usual black, or purple, I forget. Anyway, to my amusement, I found a chapter on Inu Yasha inside. #583.Holy manga no kami!!! D= It's the series that wouldn't die!!!! After IY was something much more interesting: a chapter of Adachi Mitsuru's latest(?) title. I can't remember the name, but I began to read it as best I can without my dictionaries b/c Adachi MItsuru is love and so worth it. I have a fun "Touch" story I need to blog about at some point.
Anyway, Businessman's appointment arrived and the pair talked in the lobby for a good 6 or 7 minutes. I think he was interested in buying advertising in Shonen Jump. My ears pricked when I heard that Bleach is being moved from direct-to-GN format to SJ serialization in a couple of months. Hmmmm. And they pricked even more when I heard the Slam Dunk manga was licensed. Really?! Hanamichi, Rukawa, and my own fave, Miyagi. Niiiiiiice. I then felt much sympathy for whomever is lettering the series b/c that mangaka loooooves his gymnasium backgrounds. O.o Major touchup involved there...ceilings, wooden floors, stadium seats, crowds, and action lines over all of it. Ghaaaaa.Glad it's not me. DX
I continued to enjoy the 50% of Adachi Mitsuru I could understand when--cue fanfare!--I looked up to see SE #1, SE #2, and Clay Editor #1 approaching from the large opening into Viz proper, all with smiles on their faces. And I new it was them, since I've seen photos courtesy of SE #1. ^^ As for what happens next, I do believe I'll save it for next time. XD
