s2m no Tabi no Monogatari, Day 2 part 3
Okay! We we last left our heroes, they were careening around downtown SanFran with the courageous SE #2 at the wheel, playing chicken with the rest of the traffic and dodging tourists right and left
If you recall, the main thing I wanted to see in SanFran besides Viz was the Kinokuniya book store. So that was our first stop! It was inside a mini-mall in Japantown. And...it was truly awesome. *happy sigh* I felt like I was back in that huge depaato store in Honolulu that I went to with CS-chan back in '02. The left half of the store had the Japanese books, and the right half had the English ones. Manga in both sections. *drools* I helped SE#2 track down some volumes she needed for reference, and she took a few pics with her camera phone of licensing possibilities. (Isn't that awesome? You see a book, think it looks interesting, take a pic, and then 6 months later you could be working on the English version. Very cool.) Anyway, I decided to pick up the latest Nana volumes I need for myself, namely 15-17. Interestingly, all the manga books--Japanese or English--were shrinkwrapped to keep people from reading them for free. O.o But...that's the fun part of going to Borders or Barnes and Noble! To try a new series and see if you want to buy it or not. Hmmm. But regardless Kinokuniya was amazing, and the manga books were much cheaper than if I had to buy them from an import store and then pay postage on top of that. I would have loved to hang out in the Japanese manga section longer to drool over more books, but alas.
After Kinokuniya, we stopped by a food-goodies store and I found an omiyage for Kiokonai. We wandered through a stationery store in the mini-mall, too. Finally we decided to take a break, so we stopped at the courtyard, I bought a juice, and me, SE #1, and SE #2 sat and talked shop for quite some time. Once we began to get hungry, SE #2 suggested Moroccan food. I've never had Moroccan. Curious! We made arrangements to meet CE #1 at the restaurant and made our way there.
It was this tiny little place that could hold 25 customers tops, if they were really squeezed in. And the place was hosting a private party when we arrived, so we put our names on the reservation list and wandered through a boutique to kill time. CD #1 joined us, so spent some more time in a cafe and talked. Interesting side story: in the bathroom in the place, rather than wallpaper or paint, the walls were covered with graffiti. One particularly large scrawl in girlish handwriting said something that struck me. "Stupid bitch go spend Daddy's money in LA or NY." I blinked at that, then gave it an evil grin. After all, I'm paying for this trip with my own money. Thank you very much! Ha! XD
At last, it was time to eat. We crossed the street to the restaurant and sat down. I ordered some type of soup, and remarked how one of the waitresses looked like Minnie Driver. And of course, the four of us yakked on for a good 2 hours. The food was tasty, BTW. SE #2 ordered a salad sampler, and apparently Moroccan salad is like salsa. It was excellent with the bread, though I wasn't too crazy about the beet-based one. ^^ So if you have a chance, try Moroccan for dinner. ^^
Alas, it became time to leave. SE #1 and CE #1 gave me hugs and departed to make their way home. SE #2 kindly drove me back to my hotel, where she also gave me a hug. ^^ *feels loved* I made my way to my room, figured out how I was going to cart around my purchases and oodles of Viz freebies (strategic suitcase jamming and use of both the Viz bags SE #1 gave me), and then went to sleep.
So ends day #2 of my trip. XD
