Confessions of a manga letterer, #2. Mem~~~ori~~~es...

One of the interstitial pages in Nana vol 14 is a single panel shot of Nana writing her name along with Ren's on his hometown apartment chalkboard nameplate, the one that hangs next to his door. You can see it in Nana, vol 1, page 159. To copy the lettered version, I had to open the zipped Photoshop file from my backup CD. I burned this disc on May 12th, 2005. I would have lettered this page around February or March of that year. My my my...

And :P. I wish I could go back and fix this page in vol 1. I used Komika Title for Nana's handwriting on the chalkboard, which is the first time in the series we see her scribbling. I later changed her handwriting font to Bradley ITC, when I saw how non-handwriting Komika Title looks. In early Nana, I used the same font for everyone's handwriting, namely Carl Barks. Hachi, Shoji, and Nana's letter/cake fangirl Akiko all wrote in that font. It wasn't until I had to letter Shin's resumé in vol 3 that I decided using the same font was lazy, and I should pick one that matched the character. So I selected Bradley ITC for Shin. And then forgot that was his font, so I used it later for Nana. When I realized my mistake, it was too late, so I assigned Shin Oilbats. Heh! I bet no one noticed anyway. *has shifty eyes*

Actually, using the same font for everything really does seem lazy to me. I have a list for each of my series of who has what handwriting font, in alphabetical order by character name. (Yes, I learned my lesson with the Bradley ITC repeat.) Yasu has the elegant font DearJoe. Reira has the cute and fun font Catholic Schoolgirl. I gave Misato the 50s retro font Boomerang. Hachi still has Carl Barks, as well as Akiko (who wrote Nana a 2nd letter in a later volume), and if Shoji ever writes something in Nana again, I'll pick a new font for him. Interestingly enough, the rat bastard Takumi doesn't have a handwriting font yet, even though he has written something in Nana. Remember when he left his phone number for Hachi in vol 5? On their hotel room's stationery? It only consisted of his phone number, no words, so I didn't have to letter it into English. (Typical rat bastard behavior. Just his phone number. Hmph.) Anyway, if Takumi does ever write something besides his number, I'll have to pick a font for him, too. Something sophisticated, I guess.....yet angry, too. Hmmmmm. Dr Evil might work...elegant yet slightly insane. Heh.

Okay, end reminiscence. Hope all of you in college have a relaxing Spring Break! ^^ Have some fun in my name!!! That Claymore sword of Damocles is getting closer and closer and closer *cowers*
