Happiness is s2m in a bookstore...
Today I used the first of my 14 days off. Since I'll be in Portland on my birthday, my family and I celebrated today. And of course, since you all know what a wild party animal I am, we went to Barnes & Noble, then had Chinese food at PF Chang's (I've been craving noodles for days), off to Borders, and then ice cream at Cold Slab. Mmmmm. :9 It was a wonderful day!!! XD And I really needed a break.
I must have an addiction. Never let me loose in a bookstore with a giftcard (from my neechan), a wad of cash, the will and energy to SHOP, and my all-important book list, b/c bad things happen. Heeeee. :3 Some women live to shop for shoes, or new clothes, or jewelry. Me??? Books all the way. Ohhhh, yeah!
I'm not a complete slacker, though. Once home, I packed three new boxes and finalized the others I had already done. Now I'm finishing the corrections for Captive 2, and will likely take a stab at a couple pages of Honey. Tomorrow, it's back to the grind. Wheeee!

It was difficult, but I did use some restraint. U.U I didn't buy any Viz volumes, which is a rare occurrence. (HikaGo was calling me in particular) I resisted in the hopes of future freebies. Between the two stores, I ended up with:
Prose:
Cook, Glen - The Black Company Chronicles, compilation books 1 and 2, consisting of 3 books each. So 6 books in two volumes. And they were on sale, buy one vol at $15 and get the 2nd one half off. So I bought 6 full-length books for $22. I am a professional!!! (This is some sort of classic fantasy series about mercenaries. I think. I bought it on a whim b/c--HELLO! 6 books for $22!!)
Pratchett, Terry - Night Watch. Ohhh, Discworld, YAY!! XD I have a slowly growing Discworld collection, and I rather like Captain Vimes when he appears in the other books, thus I figured I needed his solo volume to become better acquainted.
Salvatore, R.A. - The Dark Elf trilogy. Dude. You know I have a thing for elves. No, I've never read it. That's right, I bought it blind b/c it's about elves! And the author has a ton of books so he must be a decent writer since they keep publishing him. And hey look: elves!! :3
Manga:
My Cat Loki vol 2. This is an OEL from Tokyopop. I ended up with vol 1 in a trade, and was both impressed and wanted more, so I was quite delighted to see vol 2 on the shelf in Borders. Yay!!! I need to write a proper review for this series. And my other OELs.
Same Cell Organism: This yaoi title is by a doujinshi artist whose work made my jaw drop. Her name is Yumeka Sumomo, aka Chikyuuya aka the doujinshi circle of Sasshi. This is one of her two licensed original manga, and I nearly had a fit of joy when I saw it on the shelf. The art is sooo pretty...I have one of her Naruto doujinshi (her Gaara-sama OMG *dies*), which has a story of its own I'll babble about later. Anyway, I hope the story here is good, but if it's just okay or even rather thin, I really don't mind. The book is worth it for the eye-candy alone. (And this woman draws a mean bishounen. Woooo! *swoons*)
xxxHolic - vols 11 and 12. I can't believe they're already out!! I'm 3 behind with my reading again!! But that means I have tons to look forward to, right??? This manga is on my top 10 list. *is happy to have more volumes*
neither prose nor manga:
Japan Ai, by Aimee Major Steinberger - I've been curious about this book since I read of it in Shojo Beat. I pulled it off the shelf at B&N and flipped through. I liked what I saw, knew I had the giftcard and wad of cash, so I bought it. XD I plan to review it, too.
Sandman v1, by Neil Gaiman - I've been hearing about Sandman for years and years. Gaiman, too. Aside from his shared book with Terry Pratchett, Good Omens, I've never read him. Sandman is supposed to be <booming voice> A Colossal Force in Graphic Novels</booming voice>. Now I"ll get to see what all the fuss is about. I flipped through it a bit, and the art is shockingly different from what I'm used to. Pin-sized eyes and boring square layouts WHUT?? It's probably going to be difficult for me to read until I become accustomed to the "normal" style. I plan to review this as well.
Oh yeah, Borders had Wanted already on the shelf. And B&N had half a display dedicated to Skip alone. Heeeee! X3 Nana had a whole shelf at Borders, Clay too, and I grinned to see my Naruto books displayed happily in the huge Naruto section. Oh yes, and the small length of Honey at Borders was actually thinned out! They're selling! Wooooo!! It's still such a thrill to see my books in a store. ^^V
I was tempted to buy quite a few more volumes of stuff, and not just manga. I wrote a list of books to pursue from the library as audiobooks. I found about 7 or 8 things I want to "read". I checked out the Patrick O'Brien audiobook collection at Borders (they didn't have him at B&N) b/c I needed vol 2 in his Master and Commander series. They had every single volume but the one I needed. T.T Typical. But if this was the price of good manga buying luck, then it was worth it. ^^ I also tried to read the huge "Bone" compilation volume, but I didn't have enough time to try more than the first few pages. I'll have to attempt it again later. (More boring square layouts WHUT??)
I find my determination to make my own manga renewed by my trip. So many other people have published manga or Graphic Novels. I wanna do it, too!! *pumps fist in determination*
I wandered through the Young Adult sections in both stores, and was very amused to see vampire-related books consisted of about half the shelf space. I laughed. BTW, I returned my copy of Breaking Dawn. I decided it wasn't worth the $20 I paid for it. MAYBE when I can buy it used in paper back for $3 or so, then I'll pick it up again.
Maybe. *sniffs*
After chatting for a bit with our ice cream (for me: half cinnamon half strawberry YUM) we came home.
