The resurrection of Utena has begun.
Remember back in September when Utena (for-fun-stuff and pre-lettering computer) had her meltdown? That is what lead to the conscription of Usagi (laptop) to take her place, and why I have been forced to delete books for hard drive space from Tsukushi (work computer) without backing up to DVD and external drive both. I mailed Utena's shell and her two hard drives back to my father, who wanted to verify she and they were indeed fried (yep) and so he could start rebuilding her for me.
I have learned my lesson with the death of Utena, who was built with average to cheap parts for the sake of saving money. The power supply is what died and took the rest of her with it, so I told my father I wanted high end EVERYTHING. And yes, I'm going to pay for it, he's just going to put it all together for me. :P~~~~~~
He went browsing through his fave online computer parts retailer and found everything I wanted. A processor with 4G ram $370 (upgrade to 8G ram for $30 more), Fan for same $40, DVD/CD R/WR drive $40, 1500 GB hard drive (*drools* OMG that will hold sooooo muchanime work!!!) $130, 1000W Power Supply $300 (highest-rated one on the site), Case Fan $15, Video Card $100. For a grand total of....$995!!!!!!!! WOOOOO!!! *wince*
Some important things to consider are:
1. I never turn my computers off from a mixture of uploading/downloading stuff for work (it's faster at night), working 12 hours a day anyway, *cough* torrents *cough*, and well-earned paranoia. ONOES I'm not green!!1!1 Consider this proof I'm not a hipster. *snorts*
2. I've already installed my (LEGAL!) copy of Photoshop CS on three machines: Tsukushi, Utena, and Usgai. I'll have to install it again on Utena2. Every time you install a registration code, the proggie checks it against Adobe's database. I don't know if it will let me use the same code on a fourth machine. I know the codes can be maxed out, but I'm not sure what the max number is. I'm still using CS1, and will have to buy the newest version at some point (they're at CS4 now, right?) anyway, but I'd like to delay that as long as possible. Particularly since...
3. Windows 7 is due out later this year. I've heard mostly good things about it. I'd like to keep using XP as long as possible, at least until the first round of Windows 7 users have ferreted out the most obvious problems. Only I don't know if Photoshop CS4 will work with XP. (I know that Photoshop CS hates Vista.) So I might end up buying a license extension or instance or whatever the right term is for my current Photoshop version so I can install it on Utena2, then forking over the $600 or so for CS 4 (or 5 by then) when I have Windows 7 up and running.
4. Yes, I am aware that Photoshop is the most pirated software on the planet. But since I use it for a living, I think it's a good idea to stay legal.
In any case, this is going to cost me a great deal of money. *pained expression* But Utena2 will hopefully last me several years, like Tsukushi has. *knocks on wood* (Good Tsukushi. NICE Tsukushi. RELIABLE Tsukushi. *pet pet pet*) Now I have to decide if I want to go with all the parts my dad picked out, or if I want to step down a notch on one or two. Hmmmmmm. At least everything is tax deductable, right??? I'll need to make sure to keep my receipts. And here I was looking forward to having a small credit card bill for the next couple of months. *sigh*
