Stumptown 2013! Yeah! XD
Stumptown is the independent comics fest held every year in Portland, and this year I was able to go yet again! Given my work crunch, I couldn't hang out all day every day like in all but one previous year, but I was able to go for two or three hours both days, and have dinner with out of town friends. :3
This year was the best Stumptown ever! Wonderful friends truly do make a big difference. While I am happy to wander the con alone, having
winnett join me on Saturday, and
saladbats joining me for BOTH days was amazing. You find neat things to show each other, and laugh about, and deal with any stresses that might show up. Dinner afterwards on both nights with Karen and Chloe was incredibly fun, and they let me pick their brains about exhibiting at comic cons and being part of a comics collective and all sorts of fascinating comicy things. :3
I was a good girl and kept my spending under control. I bought six books, all of which had art that caught my interest. Aspect book 1 by Crystal M. Rollins; Polly and the Pirates vols 1 and 2, written by Ted Naifeh, art by Ted (v1) and Robbi Rodriguez (v2--this is the volume I wanted for art, and I picked up v1 so I could follow the story); Tea and Biscuits and Church by Michelle Nguyen (the 2nd one made me tear up! *sniffles*); and Last Train to Oldtown by Kenan Rubanstein caught my eye for color theory and is the only book I bought on Sunday. For art and/or story reasons, I picked up cards for (varying levels of SFW and NSFW, best to visit at home or where no one will care if they see naked people or blood or men kissing [le gasp] or something): artificecomic.com (Saladbats bought this webcomic's hard copy and read it twice on Saturday night and once Sunday morning. It must be pretty good! *laughs*), brokenglasscomic.com, dicebox.net, eatyourlipstick.com, myrrhmusic.com, northwestpress.com, omumanstar.com, rice-boy.com, robin.megaten.net (this woman can change her drawing style so drastically--I was outright SHOCKED!, wufableoaf.com, www.craigmorecreations.com, and youngprotectors.com.
Special mention goes to Amanda LaFrenais, from whom I bought my first commission artwork evarrr. Her style is incredibly cute and sexy and adorable. I asked for two BFFs snuggling, and she delivered! It's a gorgeous pic, lightly shaded in pink and far too cute for me to do justice in describing. (It was fascinating watching her create it, too. She just sat there and banged out a pic in about 15 minutes, chatting with us, other attendees, her table-mate, and other exhibitors all at the same time. I was very impressed.) I want to frame my piccy so it's all beautiful and hang it on my wall. (Along with the sketch I snagged from EK Weaver two years ago.)
I was able to finally meet Spike of Templar, AZ and Phil Foglio of Girl Genius a second time. I probably met a few other famous comickers, both web and print, but I didn't recognize them. ^^;;
Being around all those creative, welcoming people really has me recharged and excited about getting my original manga going. X3 I wanna have a table at Stumptown, too! Karen pointed out something interesting: while my anime-influenced artwork will (let's be honest) count against me being given a table at some cons, it will HELP me get a table at others. C: I am suddenly more optomistic. Yay!
I do believe I'm going to have to get a twitter. :3
