Of all the higher math I learned in high school (and there was a lot of it. All the way through Calculus BC) the one formula I have used the most in my adult life, by far, is calculating ratios.

Tonight I used it to find how many pixels "2 points" is at 300 dpi. Points are the classic measurement for font size from the printing industry, still in use today. But all the conversion charts and conversion sites gave the answer in 72 dpi, which is what a digital screen displays. To find the answer at 300 dpi, I had to set up a ratio and solve for X:

2.67 pixels (2 points at 72 dpi) / 72 dpi = x / 300 dpi

Wheee! The answer is 11.125 pixels. I needed this information for my next T-shirt design, which is coming along. And if my answer is wrong, do please LMK. I need the right info...

I suppose 2nd place in higher math usage IRL would be calculating cubed space. Although once, ages ago, I had to remind my father (electrical engineer) and maternal uncle (aircraft designer) about the Pythagorean Theorem when they were trying to figure out the measurements for a corner shelf in my dad's home office. NGL, I had a bit of fun at their expense. XD

Stumptown is the independent comics fest held every year in Portland, and this year I was able to go yet again! Given my work crunch, I couldn't hang out all day every day like in all but one previous year, but I was able to go for two or three hours both days, and have dinner with out of town friends. :3

This year was the best Stumptown ever! Wonderful friends truly do make a big difference. While I am happy to wander the con alone, having [profile] winnett join me on Saturday, and [personal profile] saladbats joining me for BOTH days was amazing. You find neat things to show each other, and laugh about, and deal with any stresses that might show up. Dinner afterwards on both nights with Karen and Chloe was incredibly fun, and they let me pick their brains about exhibiting at comic cons and being part of a comics collective and all sorts of fascinating comicy things. :3

ExpandSpecifics and lots of artist and webcomic links! XD )

Being around all those creative, welcoming people really has me recharged and excited about getting my original manga going. X3 I wanna have a table at Stumptown, too! Karen pointed out something interesting: while my anime-influenced artwork will (let's be honest) count against me being given a table at some cons, it will HELP me get a table at others. C: I am suddenly more optomistic. Yay!

I do believe I'm going to have to get a twitter. :3

I was incredibly irresponsible today and went out for 5 hours to visit friends. Wahhhh!!! No way can I make my quota....but I really wanted to see them. Especially Kiokonai, since she'll be leaving for school in Hawaii in 1.5 weeks. *sniff* <:[

Expandan oddity and a smell )

I have something cool to share. Don't let the hype below turn you away, give the video a try!! Link is after the aforementioned hype, which I only include for posterity and the odd bits of facts.

Link: ehhhh, sugeee da yo ne!

And something funny to share, courtesy of metaquotes: beware the fanged yeti feet!!

On the reading front, the great Harry Potter reread in preparation for book 7 continues, since I began volume 5 today. I rather like volume 5, particularly the DA meetings, Neville's improvement, and Luna. Luna is fabulous. But I can't STAND Umbridge. JK Rowling did a great job creating a character I love to hate. I wonder what those furious centaurs did to her at the very end....
