I cannot begin to express the sheer amount of joy I'm feeling at this moment. No, I didn't win the lottery, Mr. Depp did not show up on my doorstep and ask me to run away with him, I haven't been given a crew of reliable and completely trustworthy assistants, nor has Viz told me one of my senseis wants me to work with them personally in Japan. No.
Four anime have had a profound effect on me. Sailormoon, which taught me animation could be more than singing princesses and happily ever after, Fushigi Yuugi which showed me the beauty and harshness that can be shown through animation, Escaflowne for revealing the dark side of fantasy, and the final one....Violinst of Hameln.
How did Hameln affect me? Because everything that happened in that anime, all the people whose lives were affect, all the battles and wars that were fought, everything came down to one thing: the power of someone's love. Pandora's love for Hameln's father started it all. It was like a slap in the face. No conquering the world, no wanting to be the richest, no wiping out evil for the good of mankind, just.....love.
I have all of Hameln on VHS, fansubbed, since it's never been licensed. I need to go digital, which means tediously transferring my 7 year old tapes to DVD...or finding fansubs. On a whim, I searched at animesuki just now and found torrents for the entire series.
I'm downloading as I type. OMG OMG OMG. This settles it. My reward to myself when I'm finally in Portland will be to import all 30 volumes of the Hameln manga. If it makes me this happy and means this much to me, then I must have them. I don't care how much it costs.
