slr2moons: a self-portrait, of me in my usual habitat: in front of my computer monitors! (Bwa?)
Well now, THIS is an interesting situation.

My apartment's previous occupant was Indian (as in from India, not Native American), and he/she didn't leave a forwarding address. Ever since I moved in, I've been dealing with their mail by returning the important stuff to sender and recylcing the junk. Today when I checked my snail mail, I found something personal: a hand-addressed business-letter sized brown envelope...mailed from India. With the note "rakhis inside" underlined at the top. The envelope contains a smallish and slightly bulky object inside.

Huh.

A google reveals "rakhi" to be some sort of holiday charm made with beads. So at least it's not something illegal, which I admit, I did half-way fear in that 'wouldn't it be typical" way. :P

Now, what do I do with this envelope? If I scrawl "return to sender, moved, no forwarding address" on this particular letter, will it make its way back to the other side of the planet? The senders have the same last name as my apartment's former occupant, so they should know he/she moved, but if they are family then why don't they know already?

Anyway, what do I do with this envelope? I don't want to just chuck it, that seems mean. If it were from within the US, I'd scrawl the aforementioned note across the front, as I've done with all the other important mail for this person, but with the letter being from India...?

Advice? Am I being too nice? I suppose the safest thing would be to stuff it in a bigger envelope and pay to send it back, though I'm worried about copying the return address. I can't really read it all. Maybe if I cut it out of the envelope and taped it to the front of the bigger one...
