slr2moons: a self-portrait, of me in my usual habitat: in front of my computer monitors! (dance in the sun)

Mina-san, I am very happy to bring you the opening scene of my NaNo project. I'd hoped to post these pages on November 4th, but better late than never. ^^ It's become quite clear I cannot handle two pages a day on top of my paid work, so my goal is no longer to finish 50 pages by November 30th, but by December 31st. That will be challenge enough, I think!

Title: yet to be determined, actually. Still thinking on it.
Genre: drama and horror
Rating: PG-13 for dark themes and one line of dialogue. SFW if no one else notices that specific word bubble.
Length: 6 WIP pages. Clothing and character designs likely to change! Particularly since I'm working without any model sheets, which means features and clothes morph from page to page. :P Backgrounds are pretty much nonexistent, too.
Concrit welcome!

Pages behind the cut! Kyaaa! XD )

Ye gods, I am tired. Even with the extra sleep from going to bed early last night, and Daylight Savings on top of that, I'm exhausted. I even have a headache. I NEVER have headaches!

I was so stressed out over finally starting my comic, it was actually funny. Or at least it's funny now that I've settled down. :P I managed to sketch 1.25 pages, about half a page less than quota. I'm not panicking about already being behind, though, since before drawing I planned out the first scene in text form. Tomorrow I can dive right in to drawing. Wheee!

Looks like the first scene will make a nicely-sized chunk for sharing. Should be about 5 pages, which is what I intended.

Now if you will excuse me, I think I'm going to sleep early again. *konks out*

November begins in a little less than 3.5 hours, which means I'm that close to throwing myself at my first original comic. I don't have any prepared model sheets, all I have is the mental image of the characters in my head and a basic story plotline. This is due to the spirit of NaNo: creative abandon. To pour out 50,000 words in 30 days, regardless of quality. It's meant to teach you to just DO it, to get the words out and finish. You're supposed to become so desperate to make the quota that you write anything that comes to mind; the panic will force you to churn out plots and turns of phrase you would never in your sane normal state of mind commit to actual type.

My biggest fear isn't making the quota--or rather my version of it, since I'm drawing 50 pages instead of typing 50,000--but spending all this time and creative energy on something that turns out to be crap. I believe my story idea is solid, and the two people I've told about it agree and find it very interesting. I respect both of their opinions on stories, so at least I don't have to fear about my concept. No, the big question is how well I execute that idea. I might literally execute it and go down in a sad trickle of most decided UNglory, or I might pull this off and produce something I can be proud of.

I'm really hoping to manage the latter. ^^;;;

To ensure I actually make my quota of 1.67 pages a day, I will be drawing them on Usagi (fun computer) as I do paid work with Tsukushi (work computer). Normally I pre-letter on Usagi in the morning and afternoon, saving drawing on her until that's done, but not this month. For once, personal art will come first...sort of. Gotta letter manga to pay the bills.

*gulp* Well, hell. *deep breath*

BANZAIIII!!!!!

One of the artists I follow on DA posted about this, and I am sharing the information. To sum up, a fellow artist is being sued by a bootlegger who stole his ideas. Yes, the BOOTLEGGER is suing the ORIGINAL ARTIST to revoke said artist's legal copyright. The artist's name is John T. Unger, and you can read about it from him here. I wish I had the money to buy one of his actual firebowls pieces. I don't know what I'd do with it, but I wish I could!

On a personal artistic note, I'm gearing up for NaNo. Tonight I'm laying down my text outline! I have one more major plot point to decide upon, then I'm good to go. ^^V I'm not sure how much page-layouts I'll do in text only...probably only basic page contents. I'm going to be working in Photoshop for this one. I still plan on posting the pages in 5 page minimum batches as I go. On a final and positive note, a google for "[decade] fashion" brings up tons of pics and info. I love the internet. Yes, my comic spans decades. I hope it will truly be epic.

November is NaNoWriMo. For those who aren't familiar with NaNo, it's short for National Novel Writing Month. Everyone who chooses to participate starts writing on November 1st and aims for 50,000 word minimum. If you're curious, here's the official site. Some people write original fiction, some people write fanfic.

I'm going to draw a comic. :D

A picture is worth a thousand words, so I'm going to aim for a 50-page comic. In the spirit of creative abandon that is NaNo, it will be a rough draft. (Trying to ink and color or tone 1.67 pages a day on top of my work quota is insane at my current drawing speed. That, and I lack a crew of assistants!)

I'm going to try something new for me: horror. When left to my own devices, I tend to write comedy and drama. Horror will be a challenge!!  XD I prefer suspenseful Hitchcock-style over slasher stuff, personally. Less blood and more buildup! Yeah! I have a basic idea of the story I want to tell. I think it has potential!

I haven't decided if I'll be posting the rough pages or not. Is anyone interested? Or would you rather wait to see the final, finished version? Or are you here only for my paid work?

Anyway, wish me luck, minna! If any of you are also planning on participating in NaNo (be it in actual prose or also in drawing form), let me know! It would be fun to have a buddy or two on my quest. :D

ONWARD! KYAAA!
