Speaking of tv shows, learning that Madhouse is going to be producing an OAV anime version of Supernatural (yes, that Supernatural) prodded me to finally try the original show myself. I've watched the first two eps--I'll prolly watch the third one today--and so far, I like it. Dean is definitely my brother of choice. Rowr! Of course, now that I am interested in this show, I have to be completely paranoid about coming across any spoilers online. Particularly since season 1 stuff is going to be spoilery for me, and the law of spoiler limitations has long decreed season 1 spoilers no longer need warnings. :P
In my last post I mentioned the making font tryout pages for Shoujo Editor 3. She really likes for the lettering fonts to match the book's style. For example, Saiunkoku is set in an alternate universe version of ancient China, so the font I used for narration has an older, brush-written look. I didn't use my regular font for comedic shouting because SE3 decided it was too angular and modern-looking, so I found a more organic and softer font instead. New Title 5 is very different from Saiunkoku, so those fonts would look rather odd if used for it as well. Thus, the reason for the three different versions of one NT5 page for font tryouts.
Lately I've been growing more and more paranoid about the legality of fonts. Fonts are intellectual property. If you didn't legally obtain them, you can be sued for using them. D= As someone who makes a living using fonts designed by other people, I think you'll understand why this might concern me. I've amassed quite a collection of fonts starting from my early art school days back in 1998. =O I don't remember where a fourth of my font library comes from for that very reason. I've also installed many fonts that are designated as "free for non-commercial use" by their creators. I really shouldn't use those for lettering, since hey these manga vols are going to be sold and thus ARE commercial, right? D= If I try to ignore the had-forever fonts and completely cut out the freebies, I'm forced to admit that my library of legal fonts is very small.
To start fixing that, and to play it safe on the legal angle, I went font shopping for new dialogue fonts. I found three that I liked, all obtained from Blambot. If you are curious, I bought Alter Ego, Blambot Classic, and Eurocomic. I really like my new fonts, and used them on two of those NT5 sample pages. I will be amused in an ironic way if SE3 chooses the one set of fonts that DOESN'T use one of these new ones.
My moment of lucidity is ending, so I will wrap this post up. Time for some relaxation...
