slr2moons: a self-portrait, of me in my usual habitat: in front of my computer monitors! (Default)
My current audio book, Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber, reminds me of why I added #18 to my list of Things I Will Never Include in My Original Stories:

18: Exposition about my setting's history and politics and the wars that shaped it, all delivered within sight of the first page.

Although in Mr. Weber's case, it wasn't within sight of the first page. More like around page 75, if I had to estimate. (Audio book, remember.) But throwing a huge ensemble cast at the reader, with convoluted politics and double-talk and name-dropping and characters who appear only for a few paragraphs to do all this exposition is NOT going to help your reader keep everything straight.

I love thrillers with lots of politicking going on, but when it comes to novels...there MUST be a better way. GAH. I felt like I was reading to a history textbook!

It's been a while since I made a list, hasn't it? After last night, I think one is required. Ahem.

Things I Do Not Like to be Woken Up By, a list by slr2moons--based on personal experience.

1. A cat verking up a hairball.
2. A dream I realize is too good to be true.
3. The police knocking on my neighbor's door.
4. Phone call in the middle of the night.
5. My house filled with strangers (to me) that my grandmother called when she feared she was having a heart attack, rather than asking me.
6. A scorpion sting.
7. Neighbors screaming, for whatever reason. (Exuberant gaming, a fight, sex, all three...) :P
8. Drunk idiots drag racing down the parking lot.
9. Death of a family member. (See also #4.)
10. The cool feeling of a quarter-sized stink bug brushing my cheek as it walks across my pillow, almost touching my lips.

It only took me about a second and a half to realize that it was not soft and thus not a cat or myself, and that it was moving and thus not a pen, book, or phone cord.

Thirty seconds later, the bug was down the toilet, I had a new covering on my pillow, and I was mentally composing this list as I tried to go back to sleep. Ugh.

You know how a bunch of little things can add up to completely make your day?? Here is a list of fifteen small things that make me smile:

1. Tree tunnels
2. Buying a book on a whim and discovering I made an excellent choice.
3. A phone call or email from a friend.
4. Going to the store for a specific item, and finding that item on sale.
5. Spicer-kitty curled in my lap, belly-up, snoozing.
6. Finding a lovely garden on one of my walks with flowers I can sniff and admire from the sidewalk.
7. Rain. Yes, even after a year and a half of living in Portland, I still love rain.
8. When a friend tries something new on my rec and completely enjoys it.
9. Walking underneath blooming cherry trees. See also #1.
10. Gazing down at a book I've been waiting months to be released and knowing I'm about to start reading at last.
11. A really tasty bag of microwave popcorn. :9
12. Finding a paycheck waiting for me in my mailbox.
13. When my friends are happy and bouncing and full of glee.
14. The bathroom scale reading less instead of more.
15. Discovering the perfect gift for someone while shopping, and anticipating their joy upon opening it.

I could keep going, but I think I'll stop there.
